Mtn Dew, NYXL host CDL live watch party in Decentraland
PepsiCo’s popular soft drink brand Mtn Dew is partnering with esports powerhouse New York Excelsior in hosting a live watch party for Call of Duty League New York Subliners Major IV in the Decentraland Metaverse from July 14 to 17.
Other than the major tournament, the watch party is also featuring all of the competing CDL teams so viewers can tune in to the entirety of the tournament.
There are also contests and prizes such as DEW-themed wearables. After the tournament, fans can hang out as well as immerse themselves in the events and virtual mini-games designed for the metaverse.
Fans will also have a chance to win an RTFKT Clone X NFT and a VIP trip to the CDL Championship in 2022, which will be held in Los Angeles in August.
The Mtn Dew and NYXL event in Decentraland is only the first in Mtn Dew’s entry into the metaverse. Mtn Dew’s parent company and PepsiCo will be conducting many more Web3.0-based events in the future to give even more platforms for fans of Mtn Dew to engage with the brand.
Pat O’Toole, Chief Marketing Officer for Mtn Dew, commented on the event, “This event works because Mtn Dew fans tell us they are always looking for opportunities to engage with the brand, and Web3 opens up completely new ways to do that. We think fans will like what they see, and there is more to come.”
He further added the point of The Decentraland event is about Mtn Dew’s commitment to connecting with their fans in new and creative ways, saying, “We wanted our initial metaverse experience to be something innovative. Still, more importantly, it needed to be true to the spirit of Mt. Dew – we did not want to innovate just for the sake of innovating.”
With the event still in full swing and on its second day, already Mtn Dew fans are showing a positive reaction to the event, which bodes well for both the event as well as the goal of engagement and innovation set in place by the brand.
Decentraland as a gateway to the metaverse
Along with The Sandbox, Decentraland is currently one the most popular and active metaverse. These two competing metaverses have been the main choice not only for metaverse land investors, retail and institutions but also for brands seeking to enter the metaverse, as they believed that the more popular brand would stand to give them the most exposure.
Web3.0 is a relatively new engagement niche for brands to increase their popularity, as well as a form of customer engagement to create a mutual interaction between the customer and the brand. The ball is now on the court of the brands and how they would use this new niche moving forward for the sake of mutual engagement.
Many names and brands have used Decentraland as an engagement platform before Mtn Dew, namely Skechers, Vice, JP Morgan, Jason Derulo and Migos. In addition, it also hosted the very first Grand Slam Tennis in the metaverse, the AO Decentraland.
