When Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore created The Walking Dead as a comic book series, way back in 2003, no one could have ever guessed just how incredibly successful it would become. Over the years, The Walking Dead has become a massive cultural phenomenon, with millions of fans around the world loving this greatest zombie series of all time.

It all began with Rick Grimes waking up to a world full of the undead, but the brilliance of the story, the thing that made it work, was that the zombies in The Walking Dead proved nowhere near as dangerous, as brutal, or as nasty as the human survivors in this post-apocalyptic world.

Alongside the comic, the TV shows, and so much merchandise, we’ve also had a number of The Walking Dead game versions over the years. The best of them take all that’s good about the series and integrate it into the game, the worst manage to fail to understand what it is makes The Walking Dead such a perfect post apocalyptic saga.

Here at JustGamers, we wanted to give you a taster for the world of The Walking Dead games you can find, whether you’re talking The Walking Dead PS4 & Xbox games, PC games, or taking your zombie apocalypse mobile! So, we’re going to give you a look at what we think is the very best The Walking Dead PS4 & Xbox game, a fantastic mobile game, an example of how not to do it, and last but definitely not least, we’re going to tell you about a particularly great The Walking Dead casino slot machine that you’ll probably need to head to Vegas to experience!

The Walking Dead Game Series – Brutal, brilliant storytelling in a choose your path adventure.

Telltale Games official The Walking Dead game series is, probably, the best well-known of all the games based on The Walking Dead and, we think, the best The Walking Dead Xbox and PS4 game we’ve seen, although here we’re talking the comic, not the TV show.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead game was a huge success, with over 80 Game of the Year awards, although, sadly, that still wasn’t enough to save the company, which closed during the fourth and final season, with Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment having to step in to complete the game.

This The Walking Dead Xbox, PS4, PC and mobile game is a graphic adventure RPG style game, released as 19 individual, playable ‘episodes’ from 2012 to 2019, with four main seasons, extra downloadable episodes and The Walking Dead: Michonne three-part mini-series.

The Walking Dead game from Telltale tells the tale of Clemantine, a young girl caught up in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. Over the 19 episodes, we loved how the game developed, the intricate storytelling, and the fact that you, as a player, felt really involved… a great immersive experience through storytelling alone. By the end, we cared about Clemantine, we’d suffered, battled, and lost loved ones along the way alongside her. And, just as it should be, this game has its shockingly brutal moments, whether they come from the zombie encounters or, more frequently, the humans you meet along the way.

But, in the end, what made this The Walking Dead game work so well is that it’s a great story, really well told. And we think it’s definitely one that any The Walking Dead fan should be playing!

The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land – Best Walking Dead mobile game!

The Walking Dead No Man’s Land was the official mobile game of the AMC TV series, released for iOS/Apple and Android devices in 2015 and developed by Next Games.

As you’d expect, it’s a strategy RPG with a lot of killing going on, featuring plenty of characters direct from the show, including Daryl (although only for the tutorials!), Maggie, Michonne, Rick, and Glenn (poor, poor Glenn, we still miss him so!). In terms of what you get with The Walking Dead No Man’s Land, it’s a pretty standard strategy game, the sort of build your base, get resources, expand your base, head off on missions sort of game. You’ll spend most of your time out on scavenging missions, hunting walkers and scavenging resources. However, there is one big twist that makes this one stand out – the Horde feature, where every so often the game will throw a mass zombie horde at you. Time to hack, slash, kill, run, run, run!

As with so many mobile games, The Walking Dead No Man’s Land is free to play but you’ll find the developers putting in lots of extras, for lots of your real-world cash! It’s nothing revolutionary but we found it wonderfully addictive and it does what it does very well, with a big appeal for fans and a great deal of play.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Game – Sometimes the games just don’t work!

So far, we’ve told you about what we think the best Walking Dead Xbox & PS4 game is and a really addictive Walking Dead mobile game, but at JustGamers we think it’s important to let you know not just about the great games but the games we think you should avoid as well. And, sadly, The Walking Dead game from Overkill is one of those!

When it was first announced, we were hoping that it would be a more action focused shooter but, on its release in late 2018, it proved a rather poor affair. It was trailed as a great collaborative adventure but ended up a pretty limp basic shooter, lacking decent storylines and characters, which really does go against everything that made the comics and the TV show so popular in the first place! Yes, there’s a place for mindless kill-fests, but this just didn’t get it right at all. The plot, for what it’s worth, centres around you taking the role of one of four playable characters (you can unlock an extra two later on) who are locked in a battle with a rival group of humans, known as The Family. You don’t find out why, there’s no characterisation, no meaning, and that makes the kill-heavy gameplay feel a little pointless.

And it’s not just us who thought it wasn’t the best. Initially released for PC, Overkill’s The Walking Dead game PS4 and Xbox One versions were first postponed and then cancelled. It seems Skybound, the company overseeing all things WD, had reservations about the quality, going so far as to say it “Did not meet our standards nor is it the quality we were promised”. Which means we’re still waiting for that kick-ass The Walking Dead game, but Skybound surely won’t leave fans waiting for too long!
