Turner Sports partners with Immutable X to develop Ethereum-based games, collectibles

Media company Turner Sports announced Tuesday that it had partnered with Immutable X to help the company to develop Ethereum-based games and collectibles. The cryptocurrency and NFT markets took a beating this spring, with some prices plummeting by 75 percent. However, Turner Sports has been continuing to show interest in blockchain.

Turner Sports SVP for digital league business operations, growth, and innovation Yang Adija said in a statement, “We believe strongly that NFT-enabled, play-to-earn games are a new category in gaming that have tremendous potential”.

Adija asserted that Immutable X could assist them in enriching the company’s portfolio as Immutable X was a prominent provider of consumer-friendly technology with reasonable gas fees. Immutable X also has a solid track record.

Last spring, Turner Sports rolled out one of the first NFT projects from a leading sports publisher, generating $1 million in sales of Open Run collectibles. Most recently, Blocklete Golf was launched, allowing users to compete for currency prizes and purchase digital golfers.

Turner previously collaborated with structural partners on a project-by-project basis. NBA Top Shot was also built on Flow, the blockchain behind Blocklete Golf.

“As we talk to our league partners, we can have conversations with them more directly about what we can help bring to the table from a technical standpoint, a blockchain standpoint, and that really helps us in the marketplace,” said Adija.

“We’re hoping to bring in that next set of non-NFT audience, so we need the technology and at least the thought process to be along that way.”

In addition to its low transaction fees, Immutable X claimed it was capable of handling thousands of transactions per second and listing NFTs on multiple marketplaces concurrently. Immutable X has been supporting several gaming projects on its platform as well.

“We’re proud that our partnership with Turner Sports matches two best-in-class organizations to expand the availability of compelling sports content and drive engagement in the Web3 ecosystem,” said Immutable X Co-founder Robbie Ferguson in a statement.

“Their history of innovation at the intersection of sports and blockchain gaming is unrivaled, and we look forward to working together to power the next generation of sports content through our highly scalable, carbon-neutral, and gas-free platform.”

Despite the current decline in NFT and cryptocurrency prices, Adija maintained that the company remained optimistic. Going forward, he asserted that blockchain technology and NFTs would prove to be increasingly significant.
